Kathy Lynn Barrett Fergerson, 69, of Summer Shade, Kentucky, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 24, 2026, at Tristar Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Her passing leaves a quiet in Summer Shade that only a woman of her warmth and magnitude could fill.
Kathy was born on May 19, 1956, in the same small town she would spend her life loving — Summer Shade, Kentucky. She was raised with deep roots, strong values, and a heart that never learned how to turn anyone away. To know Kathy was to know what genuine, unconditional love looks like lived out loud in the rhythms of everyday life.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, James Lonnie and Fern Lucille Barrett, and her dear brother, Richard Dale (Liz) Barrett — those who shaped her, knew her first, and no doubt welcomed her home.
Kathy is survived by her two sons, Jeremy (Beth) Fergerson of Plainfield, Indiana, and Josh (Rachelle) Fergerson of Elizabethtown, Kentucky — two men she poured her whole self into raising, who carry her laugh, her strength, and her spirit forward every single day. She is also survived by the father of her boys, Jerry Fergerson.
Her greatest joys were her four grandchildren — Kaden Fergerson, Carter Fergerson, Preslee Fergerson, and Lilly Fergerson — each one a living testament to the legacy she leaves behind. She loved them with the particular fierceness that only a grandmother can summon, the kind that makes grandchildren feel like they are the most important people on the entire earth.
Kathy is also survived by her brother-in-law, Trent (Darci) Fergerson of Hendersonville, Tennessee, and her three sister-in-laws: Vickie Stephens of Shepherdsville; Lacy (Grayland) Lloyd of Bowling Green; Gloria (Bruce) Sullivan of Summer Shade; aunt Margaret Barrett of Randolph; Mitchell (Tina) Barrett of Bowling Green and LaKettia (Tommy) O’Leary of Edmonton — those who shared her blood, her memories, and the quiet language of a family that goes all the way back. She leaves behind several nieces and nephews, and a circle of many, many children she raised as her very own — because that is who Kathy was. If you needed a mother, she became one.
And no tribute to Kathy would be complete without honoring her two beloved fur babies, her boys — Colby Jack and Bear Willie — who were her loyal companions and constant comfort.
Kathy Lynn Barrett Fergerson was Summer Shade born and Summer Shade raised. She was the kind of woman small towns are built around — steady, selfless, and always home. Her door was open, her table was set, and her love was never rationed. The world is quieter without her, but Heaven is undeniably louder.
She didn’t just raise children — she raised a community. And every life she touched is her legacy.
Funeral services for Kathy will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home in Edmonton with burial in the Missionary Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00PM until 8:00PM Monday and after 8:00AM Tuesday here at the funeral home.
The family has one heartfelt request — if you have a photo of Kathy, please bring it to services. Whether tucked in a pocket or slipped into an envelope, every picture tells a piece of her story. The family would be deeply honored to receive your photos as keepsakes and cherished memories of a life so beautifully lived.
In lieu of flowers, hug your people a little tighter and love a little louder — just like Kathy always did.
