John Lewis “J.L.” Blaydes, age 76, passed away Friday, August 21, 2026, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital. He was born in Glasgow, Kentucky, on June 12, 1950, to the late Cosby Blaydes and the late Clarice (Keltner) Blaydes.
J.L. was a proud resident of Edmonton, whose roots ran deep in the region’s soil. He dedicated his life to multiple callings: as the owner of his own logging company and a devoted farmer, J.L. embodied the values of diligence and resilience that define rural life. His commitment to public service was equally profound—he served with honor as a former Metcalfe County Deputy Sheriff and as a former Edmonton City Police Officer, helping ensure the safety and well-being of his fellow citizens.
Alongside his professional and personal commitments, J.L. cherished the simple pleasures of life in Kentucky. He was an avid hunter, a pastime that forged connections with nature and with those he loved.
He is survived by his loving wife, Helen Blaydes; son, Matthew Blaydes; daughters, Terri Carroll, and Christina Milton; grandchildren, Conner Burton, Taylor Carroll, Breanna Dicks, Blake Dicks, Hannah Dicks, Mary Jane Blaydes, Odin Blaydes, Danielle Bowles, and Trittany Ballard; great-grandchildren, Aubriegh Ballard, Colesen Ballard, Jayce Ballard, Averie Ballard (Georgia), Sélah McGlone, Alexis Robertson and Kyndelle Brann; nephew, Ricky Parnell. Also survived by his beloved fur babies, Lemont, Scooter and Pepper.
In addition to his parents, J.L. is preceded in death by his sons, Nathan Blaydes and John Blaydes; daughter, Crystal Blaydes; great-grandchildren, Oakley and Hazley; and his dear sister, Elgin Parnell.
Funeral services for Mr. Blaydes will be held 1:00PM, Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home in Edmonton with burial in Union Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 8:00PM on Monday and after 8:00 AM Tuesday until time of the service at the funeral home.
