It is with deep sadness that the family of Gary Compton announces his passing on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at the Medical Center of Bowling Green, surrounded by his loved ones. Gary fought a brave battle with cancer, diagnosed in July 2023, and spent the last two years living life to the fullest, cherishing time with his family on the farm that he loved so much.
Born on September 17, 1950, in Edmonton, Kentucky, Gary was the son of William Riley Compton and Madaline Riddle Compton. He grew up on the family farm, where his work ethic and love for the land were nurtured. He was a member of the South Edmonton Church of Christ, where his faith was strong and his presence felt by many.
Gary was married to the love of his life, Johanna Shive Compton, on July 18, 1970, and the two shared 55 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and unwavering commitment. Together, they raised two daughters, Susan Mathews and Kelly Jo Harbison (Chris), both of Edmonton, Kentucky. Gary was a proud and devoted father and later, a beloved grandfather to his three grandchildren: Carter Lee Harbison, Riley Jo Mathews, and Maddie Dale Harbison, all of Edmonton. He found immense joy in watching them grow and spending time with them on the farm, where he enjoyed sitting on the porch with his dog and cat, soaking in the simple pleasures of life.
Gary was a proud employee of Coca-Cola for 50 years, a career that provided for his family and allowed him to enjoy his true passions—working the land and raising tobacco and cattle on his farm. He was known for his quiet strength, work ethic, and generosity, always willing to lend a hand to those in need. His commitment to his family, his faith, and his community will be remembered by all who knew him.
Gary is also survived by his mother-in-law, Joy Shive of Edmonton, and his brother-in-law, Larry Shive (Sherry) of Edmonton, both of Edmonton and his Coke Boys who he loved like his own. He was preceded in death by his brother, Carl Compton, and his grandparents, Callie and Clem Compton and John and Pearl Riddle and his father-in-law J.O. Shive.
Gary leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and family. He will be missed deeply, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral services will be held at Butler Funeral Home on Sunday, July 6th at 2:00 PM. The burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Randolph. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM Saturday and continue until the time of service.
Rest in peace, Gary. You will be dearly missed.
